Last Song About You

from Fusion Frequency by Man After Midnight

about

This is the kind of piano ballad I've written a lot in the past. It's the oldest song on the record, for sure. Over the years this one really stuck with me because it expresses an emotional state that's completely overlooked in the average love song: The very moment you realize you've overcome heartbreak. When the loss is still killing you inside, but at least you're able to see a road ahead. I like how the last line doesn't rhyme with anything before it, giving the song an uneasy sense of closure. The melody screamed out for a thick Jeff Lynne snare and Mellotron flutes. It was also the only track I couldn't finish on my own. I asked my old pal Peter van Breukelen to add a lyrical bass part on his Fender Precision and my brother plays acoustic guitar.

lyrics

This is the last song about you
At least I hope it is
It’s not that I’m out of lyrics
I’d write another twenty just like this

And yet I sing the last song about you
This is all heartache deserves
Nothing I do will make you care about me
By now I’ll probably get on your nerves

Yes now I see
I wasn’t made for you
I was made for myself
And for the things I can do

And if you don’t believe that
Just listen to the sound
Of all the different songs I’ve made
While you were not around

And although I miss you again
I don’t need you

I never liked the friends you had
It’s time that I confessed
They stimulated a part of you I hated
Brought out your bad side, you forgot the rest

So now you’re one of them
I wonder why
You were best in the days we were all alone
When you weren’t drunk or high

Yes now I see
I wasn’t made for you
I was made for myself
And for the things I can do

And if you don’t believe that
Just listen to the sound
Of all the different songs I’ve made
While you were not around

And although I miss you again
Although I miss you again
Although I miss you again
I don’t need you
